A Mercedes driver left two people with broken bones in a head-on crash near Burford.

Catherine Mullins, 65, was on the wrong side of the B4020 Shilton Road on December 18 last year when she smashed into the oncoming vehicle.

One of the two women in the other car was left with fractured ribs, a broken breastbone and was left unable to drive. The second victim suffered broken bones, was in ‘constant pain’ and had to wear a back brace.

Appearing before Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (July 4), Mullins, of South Molton, Devon, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving.

The defendant, who had no previous convictions and a clean driving licence, was behind the wheel of a 66-plate Mercedes E class when she caused the crash.

One of the victims described Mullins' car approaching theirs on the wrong side of the road as if she was overtaking another vehicle or treating the road like a dual carriageway. No reason was given for her being on the wrong carriageway.

Defending, Derek Barry asked the bench to order a pre-sentence report from the probation service.

The magistrates agreed to the request and adjourned sentencing until a hearing on July 27.

Chairman of the bench Tom Petersen said the bench on the next occasion would consider ‘how the crash took place’ and her culpability.

She was granted unconditional bail and given an interim driving disqualification.
