A child is seriously ill following an incident at the River Thames at Goring.
The ten-month-old girl was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
The mother and the baby's three-year-old sister, who were also believed to have entered the river, were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.
No details have been released about the toddler or her family.
Police said a "scene watch" was still in place following the incident, which happened at about 9.45am.
The initial police report said that the child had been pronounced dead at hospital.
But later, a spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "The child was airlifted to the JR2 Hospital where she was initially thought to be dead; however a very faint heartbeat was then discovered.
"She remains in hospital in a critical condition."
