A pupil called Elodie from Wolvercote Primary School said: “I have really enjoyed today. It is great being in the massive hall and watching the band and singing the songs all together.”
Zimbe! Come, sing the songs of Africa! was composed by Alexander L’Estrange and is an uplifting celebration of traditional songs from all over Africa in jazz style.
The performance was the culmination of weeks of separate rehearsals in primary schools across Oxford.
The children came together for the first time for a final rehearsal before they performed the same day.
The group were accompanied St Edward’s Chapel Choir, St Edward’s Singers, a local community choir, and a professional jazz quintet including African drummers.
The performance was the first in a series of partnership projects at St Edward’s school championing music in local schools.
Zimbe! Come sing the songs of Africa was first premiered in 2008 at Carnegie Hall.
It has been performed nearly 200 times worldwide since then.
