A school in west Oxford received a prestigious art award which has been accredited by Arts Council England.

West Oxford Community Primary School celebrated receiving the gold Artsmark Award for providing arts and culture provision which was ambitious and broad.

The Artsmark Award is the only creative quality standard for schools and the competition is open to primary, secondary and special schools.

Headteacher Emma Goodes said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving our Artsmark Gold Award.

“We are committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education and we look forward to continue to grow with Artsmark.”

The school was supported by Artswork in planning and developing their objectives.

Dr Darren Henley, chief executive of the Arts Council, said: “I would like to congratulate West Oxford Community Primary School on their Artsmark Award.

“Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that through offering a broad, ambitious, and creative curriculum, every pupil can develop character and resilience, increasing their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with them through to adult life.”

Arts Council England supports schools across the country to develop and celebrate arts and cultural education.

The award was celebrating 20 years of arts, culture and creativity in schools.

The primary school was founded in 1913 and children aged three to 11 can attend the mixed gender school.
