A trio of Oxfordshire drivers have been fined in the past few weeks for traffic infringements on the M1.

The cases were dealt with by magistrates at courts around England through what is called the ‘single justice procedure’.

It means a single justice will read the evidence presented by the police and the account given by the driver if they have responded to a letter warning them of the prosecution, before deciding on the punishment.

Fined for speeding at 63mph

Luke Hayes, 23, of East Challow, near Wantage, was behind the wheel of a VW Golf on the M1 between junctions 6A and 7, near Hemel Hempstead, when he was caught doing more than the 40mph variable speed limit.

The automatic camera, which flashed him on June 30 last year, caught the VW driving at 63mph.

Hayes admitted speeding and the case was dealt with at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court earlier this month, when he was fined £466, given six penalty points and ordered to pay £296 in costs and surcharge.

Daventry

Mikel Bala, 30, of Oxford Road, Abingdon, was caught driving a Mercedes C220 on the M1 near Daventry on April 15 when he did not a valid driving licence or insurance.

He was fined £160 by the Northampton magistrates, ordered to pay £154 in costs and surcharge and his notional licence was endorsed with six penalty points.

Wakefield

Jonathan Pardoe, 60, of Ruscote Avenue, Banbury, was fined £660 and given six penalty points after a magistrate in Bradford – dealing with his case ‘on the papers’ rather than in open court – found that he had failed to respond to a request from West Yorkshire Police that he identify a speeding driver.

It followed a vehicle registered to him being caught doing 83mph on the M1 between junctions 39 and 40, near Wakefield, on October 16 last year.

The speeding charge was withdrawn in favour of the failing to provide information allegation.
