A new memorial to Catholic and Protestant martyrs associated with Oxfordshire has been unveiled in a city centre church.
Oxford University Chancellor Lord Patten of Barnes torday unveiled the memorial, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings, at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, in High Street.
The memorial consists of a slate plaque, inscribed with the names of 23 martyrs, framed by Portland stone and with a crown and palm fronds cast in bronze.
The project was sponsored by church historian Prof Diarmaid MacCulloch and by the Rev Prof John Morrill, an honorary fellow of Trinity College, Oxford.
The Rev Canon Brian Mountford, of the church, said: "People were moved. It was a very special day and there was an extremely good atmosphere.
"There was a sense of holiness."
