Residents have raised objections to plans to demolish a chapel in Botley and replace it with two office buildings.

The building at 31 West Way is already being used for employment purposes.  

It operated as a chapel between 1913 and 1968 and changed to commercial use some time after this.

The demolition application was received by Vale of White Horse District Council on April 14 and is open for public consultation until May 20.

The target decision date is currently set at July 18.

One resident Alison Gorton commented on the council’s public planning portal: “I strongly oppose the demolition of the old chapel.

“This is a part of North Hinksey that should be preserved.

“We are demolishing too many iconic building for construction companies to turn into modern eyesores.”

Louise Price added on the public planning portal: “I object strongly to the demolition of such a beautiful chapel to replace it with modern flats.

“The reference is misleading. This is not 'land'. It is a building which has character and historical significance.

“There are very few buildings of this age and interest left in the area.”

She added: “It would be extremely sad if the existing building is knocked down purely to build modern office buildings.

“There are plenty of offices in the local area, a lot of which are vacant.”

But according to the developer, the existing buildings are in a poor condition.
