Let us see more! That was the plea from readers after our look back at the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth.

Towns and villages throughout Oxfordshire celebrated the crowning with street parties, carnivals, parades, races, competitions and much more.

They were joined by many communities in North Berkshire - Abingdon, Wantage, Wallingford and Didcot didn’t become part of Oxfordshire until 1974.

Oxford Mail photographers were kept busy trying to cover as many of the events as possible. So here is another selection from readers and from our files.

Picture 1 comes from Sue Laverty, of Stratfield Road, Kidlington, and was taken at a Coronation party for children living in Hugh Allen Crescent, New Marston, Oxford.

She tells me: “I don’t know all the names, but my father, Bob Wheeler, is seen crowning Elizabeth Strickland. Next to him is Mrs Strickland and next to her, I think, is Mrs Brett.

“The crowning took place on the Wadham College sports ground at the bottom of Hugh Allen Crescent.”

In Picture 2, we see children at Kings Sutton, near Banbury, enjoying their new playground which was opened as part of the village’s Coronation celebrations.

Families in Cotswold Crescent, Chipping Norton, in Picture 3, enjoyed their celebrations with the town’s mayor and mayoress, while Picture 4, taken at Charlbury, near Witney, shows some of the entrants in the carnival parade through the town.

The British Legion hall at Didcot was the venue for the Coronation party for families in Picture 5.

Another happy event took place at Greyfriars Roman Catholic School in Iffley Road, Oxford, in Picture 6.

With plenty of balloons and happy faces, everyone was clearly having a good time.

Parties weren’t the only way families celebrated the Coronation. Several readers remembered their mums and dads buying or renting a television so that they could see the ceremony at Westminster Abbey and the processions before and after. One remembered having a house full - her family were the only ones in the vicinity with the television and invited everyone without one to join them. She recalled: “Our dining room was packed and neighbours were standing in the hall looking over everyone’s shoulders.”
