The Westgate Centre has taken another step forward as a new global footwear store is opening at the city centre shopping hub.

Hoardings have gone up to tell shoppers that Sole Trader will open this summer.

It comes as discount clothing chain TK Maxx is also opening a new store at the shopping centre, after announcing a move from the Clarendon Centre.

New stores opening follow the closure of Paperchase stationers and specialist tea company T2.

Sole Trader is a global shoe retailer and sells trainers, boots and sandals.

It also sells backpacks, wallets and purses, beanie hats, baseball caps, face masks and belts.

Its website says: "Sole Trader is part of a group founded in 1946 that has developed strong relations with cultural icons like Dr Martens. We have worked with Dr Martens since their launch in 1960.

"Sole Trader curates designers' own work and collaborates with designers on new projects. We have worked with Paul Smith and Burberry, and our own designers create unique collections for Simon Carter.

"We founded a new concept under the Sneakers x Sole Trader label to give oxygen to genuine performance labels like Asics and On."

No dates have been revealed yet for the opening of Sole Trader or TK Maxx.

In 2019, TK Maxx, which mainly sells cut-price designer clothes, opened a new store at the Clarendon Centre.

It was filling the space left by Spanish clothing brand Zara, which moved out of the shopping centre to the Westgate.

Now large signs have gone up at the Westgate to alert shoppers that TK Maxx will be opening in the former New Look unit.

Oxford Mail:

Brendan Hattam, centre director at Westgate Oxford, said earlier: "We can’t wait to add TK Maxx to our retailer line-up this year, and we will be sharing updates around the store opening in due course.”

Stationery chain Paperchase collapsed and went into administration after failing to find a buyer for the business.

All 106 stores, including the one at Westgate are closing - with about 1,000 employees losing their jobs.

Tesco has agreed to buy the high street stationery chain’s brand but not its shops or workforce.

Oxford Mail:

The supermarket giant has announced a deal to buy the brand and intellectual property from insolvency specialists.

The Paperchase retail unit is now standing empty and it is not yet know which retailer will move in.
