Toyota's new hydrogen fuel cell/electric hybrid motor vehicle has a cruising range of 515 miles, more than double that of the 205 miles offered by the firm's earlier version.
Limited cruising ranges of previous fuel cell systems presented obstacles to widespread fuel cell vehicle use but the Toyota FCHV-adv (fuel cell hybrid vehicle-advanced) improves the cruising range with a newly-designed high-performance Toyota FC Stack.
Further technical innovation in the five-seater estate car allows it to start and operate in temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, so it can be used in a wide variety of global climates.
Mass production of the vehicle is still a long way off, but Toyota in Japan says it is working with Government, energy companies and other parties to bring about more widespread fuel cell vehicle use.
