Both carriageways of the M40 were closed today (April 2) as a group of males involved in 'high end criminality' stopped in lane 3 and ran across the fields on either side of the motorway.

The road was shut by police so that they could be apprehended safely.

The incident occurred between Junction 3 and Junction 4 of the motorway near High Wycombe at lunchtime today.

But the closure caused long delays that affected traffic travelling through the Oxfordshire area.

Police have apologised for any inconvience caused.
