Just Stop Oil protestors staged a ‘go slow’ march in Oxford today (April 2) delaying traffic in the city centre.

Around 24 people took part in the protest which began at around 12pm at Oxpens Meadow.

The protestors were holding banners and chanting ‘no new oil.’

They were demanding that the government stop all new UK oil and gas projects.

Daniel Knorr, 21, a university student from Oxford said: “I am marching today because I have no other choice.

“By continuing to invest in new fossil fuels the government engages in a project whose only result will be the death of millions and suffering of many more.

“I refuse to be complicit in this death project and therefore I must take meaningful disruptive action to try and stop this government and their plans.

“I think civil resistance is the most effective tool we have to combat the climate crisis.

“But beyond effectiveness it is also what's best for me. In the past I suffered from great anxiety when thinking about the future.

“Taking action and meeting such selfless, loving and generous people who take action with me has filled me with hope for our future.”

The march comes following the government’s announcement that it plans to launch its revamped Net Zero Strategy in Aberdeen which the protestors have labelled ‘the oil capital of the UK.’

Oxford resident Jessica Upton said: “ I have friends in Oxford whose homes have flooded, my child has been hospitalised in the JR with asthma linked to air pollution, Oxford food banks are vital to too many families.

“We can see the linking of the climate crisis, cost of living crisis and social injustice all around us.

“Just Stop Oil’s message of no new fossil exploration or production with the money saved being diverted to a transition to clean renewable energy, insulation and better public transport addresses climate change, pollution and the cost of living crisis.

“It is doable and sensible and just needs political will, which needs public pressure, which needs public awareness.

“I’m marching today to raise that awareness and get the conversation going.

“We have enough fossil fuel already out of the ground to last about 8 years.

“Let’s use that time to end our addiction to it.”

The action in Oxford comes following a year of action by Just Stop Oil.

Since the campaign began on April 1 last year, there have been over 2,000 arrests of Just Stop Oil supporters, with 138 having been imprisoned.
