A priory has applied for a major refurbishment which would allow its friars to stream online.

The Carmelite Priory near Boars Hill has applied for a major upgrade to its existing buildings to compete with the development of online ministries.

This includes a recording and performing studio, streaming equipment in conference rooms and the chapel, data connectivity improvements, and small rooms “equipped for online spiritual direction.”

In its planning application, the priory said the need for online streaming had been brought about by the covid pandemic.

The priory was once a student house for training priests but in recent years has been running teaching courses and retreats.

Its application would see three existing buildings - Chilswell House, the Pyramid and the Cottage – unified as one structure, connected by two storey-link buildings.

As well as online streaming, the planned development would update some buildings which are described as “a burden on the ministry.”

This includes a 1960’s single-storey wing provides which “has long outlasted its intended life and neither looks attractive nor is adaptable to current needs or environmental standards.”

The priory, which can accommodate up to 32 guests, also plans to ensure each room has its own bathroom facilities.
