A concerned pet-owner has called for dogs in Didcot to be always kept on leads when out in public.
The woman, who proposed the “dog policy” at an annual town meeting, said she had noted a rise in in the number of dog attacks in the area.
She said: “I would like to see brought forward a dog policy where people taking their dogs out in public remain on a lead.
“A friend’s dog was nearly attacked a few days ago in Edmonds Park. You get some daft owners saying, ‘my dog’s alright’. Well, you’re dog might me, but the one its going for might not be.
“My dog doesn’t like being rushed by other dogs. It needs to be done because you can see it on Facebook and the local news about people or their dogs being attacked.”
Town council leader Mocky Khan, who joined other councillors at the meeting on Monday night (March 20), said it was down to the owners to make sure their dog was safe.
He said: “What needs to happen is the owners need to take responsibility. The owners know their dogs better than anybody else.
“What they need to do is see the environment, see who’s around. If there’s no one around, they can let the dogs run free because we do welcome dogs in our parks.
“But its really a sense of them using their common sense, being aware of their surroundings and who’s around.”
