The girls’ football team at an Oxford primary school has made it through to the penultimate stage of a national competition.

The team from St Michael’s Primary School on Marston Road are heading to Bristol on March 25 for the regional finals of the ESFA Pokemon Primary Schools Cup.

The ESFA Pokemon Cup is the largest primary school football competition in England with over 5,000 teams and 50,000 children taking part.

It consists of four rounds: the district round, the county finals, the regional finals and finally the national finals.

The finals are played on a premier league pitch.

St Michael’s U11 side became county champions a few weeks ago, pipping Goring Primary School in south Oxfordshire to the top spot.

The girls have been inspired by the Lionesses who made history after winning the Euros last July.

Rosa, from year 6, who plays for the team, said: “I think the regional finals are going to be really fun and I can’t wait to go to Bristol.

Oxford Mail:

“It will be awesome.

“My favourite Lioness is Chloe Kelly as she plays for Manchester City!”

The girls all got in involved in football at the primary school through a club organised by their teacher Samantha Hastings.

Ms Hastings said: I really struggled  to get a girls’ team up and running initially but I think these girls because they have done so well, that will be an inspiration at the school.

“It’s inspiring other children and getting them on board.”
