The Inspector Morse series, starring John Thaw, ran from the late 1980s until 2000 and was then followed by the Lewis series and Endeavour, starrring Shaun Evans and Roger Allam.

Following a Morse-themed guided tour, fans of the series gathered at St Barnabas Church in Jericho to hear from Abigail Thaw - daughter of John Thaw - about his feelings about the role and her own as Dorothea Frazil, the editor the Oxford Mail in Endeavour.

Oxford Mail:

Ms Thaw took a selfie with the audience to send to Shaun Evans.

Anton Lesser, who plays Chief Superintendent Bright in the latest series, spoke about his role and the relationship with DCI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam and Morse (Shaun Evans).

They were complemented by some real policemen - former Thames Valley Chief Constable Peter Neyroud and Former Detective Inspector Dermot Norridge.

Both grudgingly accepted that Inspector Morse was good at his job.

The whole event was compered by Geraldine Peers, the face of BBC Oxford for 22 years. The festival raised £1,500 for the church clock and pantry appeal.

Some fans came from as far away as Canada and California.

John Mair is the editor of Morse, Lewis and Endeavour, published by Bite Sized Books, which is available at Blackwells and on Amazon.

Mr Mair said earlier: "It really is a significant end of an era now that Endeavour is finishing - Morse has been on our screens for about 36 years.

"There will never be another Morse and I wanted to do something to recognise the legacy of Morse.

"People have great memories of the series, and I think the Morse franchise has done a lot for Oxford - it has also built the profile of certain colleges.

"Morse has been hugely popular in America and indeed all over the world."

The Inspector Morse TV series was based on the novels of Oxford author Colin Dexter who died in 2017.

Before he died he wrote in his will that Shaun Evans would be the last actor to play Inspector Morse.

The author said: "We never want to repeat what John (Thaw) has done.

"A lot of people connected with Morse didn’t want anyone coming along to say we will try and outdo dear old John. I said I’m not ever going to allow that, full stop.”

The last episode of Endeavour is being shown at 8pm on ITV.
