A motorist has been jailed for fleeing a road crash which injured six people and then lying to police so his girlfriend would not find out.
Nathan Bird, 22, of Dunsomer Hill, Didcot, left Chelcie Berefield with a fractured skull in the passanger seat of his father's 4x4, which he had borrowed, after a head-on crash with a van.
Five men were left injured in the van.
He told police he fled from the scene of the accident because he didn't want his girlfriend to discover he had given another girl a lift behind her back.
Oxford Crown Court heard Bird, who was jailed for six months on Tuesday, concocted a web of lies saying he was not behind the wheel of the powerful vehicle and that he was in bed with his girlfriend Abby Williams at the time of the crash.
He admitted careless driving and perverting the course of justice after lying to police about the collision. DNA evidence linked him to the scene.
The accident happened on Whitchurch Hill, Whitchurch, at 6.40am on September 12 last year.
Defending, Graham Russell said Bird panicked and got deeper into a situation which he could not get out of.
Judge Julian Hall told Bird: "You were unbelievably stupid, careless to an extreme."
