Motorists and councillors fear that unlit bollards on a busy Wallingford road will cause night-time accidents.

The illuminated bollards in the middle of the A4074 were damaged in a collision in December and no longer light up or reflect headlights at night.

There are also no streetlights at the section of road near the junction with Benson Lane.

Oxfordshire County Council said it was planning to inspect the site.

Barbara Karayi came across the road hazard when driving to her mother’s house in Benson on Friday evening (February 10).

She said: “I was driving in a chain of cars and the road is quite wide so cars can overtake if they want.

“Then suddenly this traffic island is in the middle of the road, and the shock was not having seen it until I was right there.

Oxford Mail:

“When you come up the road even your headlights don’t see it because you’re just reflecting blackness.

“You really think you are driving in the middle of nowhere and then the bollards just come out of nowhere. If someone was overtaking, it could really cause some damage.

“I was driving below the speed limit. What if there was a van or lorry driving up right behind? It would be very easy for something dreadful to happen.”

Ms Karayi, who lives in Goring, also raised concerns for pedestrians who use the island to get to a bus stop on the other side of the road.

“I don’t know people are supposed to survive that crossing now,” she said. “It is lethal at the best of times, but this is worse.”

She has reported the hazard to her MP John Howell and county councillors Freddie Van Mierlow and Andrew Gant.

When she reported the incident on website FixMyStreet, she noticed multiple complaints had already been made.

Town councillor Katharine Keats-Rohan said: “I believe it should be fixed promptly. You have got something that is not visible at night and a couple of months is way too long.

“There is far too little maintenance going on in Wallingford. Fundamentally, the problem is budgetary but there needs to be more explaining to people when the work is going to be done.”

Mayor Marcus Harris added: “There is a lot of traffic disruption in and around Wallingford at the moment so alternative routes need to be in the best condition night and day.”

A spokesman from Oxfordshire County Council said: “We will carry out an inspection and instruct any necessary remedial works to be carried out.”
