An award-winning butchers which has been in business for over 50 years has been forced to close due to the cost of living crisis.

Newitts of Thame on the High Street has won countless awards for its pies, meats and smoked products.

But soaring energy costs and the after effects of the pandemic mean the shop has had to shut down permanently.

Newitts posted on its social media: "It is with regret that we’ve taken the difficult decision to close the business with immediate effect.

"The downturn in High Street footfall post Covid and astronomical increases in energy and fuel costs means that it's no longer viable for us to continue trading."

And they urged customers to carry on supporting the town's shops and keep them afloat.

"Now, more than ever, it's so important to support local businesses. Businesses who are fighting for their lives, supporting local jobs, supporting local economies.

"Use 'em or lose 'em and #ShopLocal have never been more important," they said.

The shop also thanked "all our loyal customers who have supported us over the years. It has been our pleasure to serve you."

The Newitt family have been in Thame since 1810.

In 1965 Michael and Susan Newitt bought the 17th century butcher’s shop on the High Street and were joined by Tom, a graduate of Smithfield College and Member of the Institute of Meat, in 1990.
