A FUNDRAISING campaign is launched this weekend to raise £1m to remodel the interior of a Bicester church.
A day of fun and activities takes place at St Edburg's Church, in Church Street, and in Sheep Street today.
The highlight of the day will be at noon, when soldiers from 23 Pioneer Regiment, based at St David's Barracks, abseil from the top of the 65ft bell tower, unveiling the campaign banner.
Bicester team rector Canon Theresa Scott said the parish church was the oldest religious building in the town, with parts dating from the 12th century.
She said: "Ancient buildings come with a responsibility, and our church is in need of some urgent maintenance work."
To highlight the importance of the church's presence in the town, a 'church treasure hunt' will also take place.
Local primary school children and shoppers have been challenged to find church objects in the windows of 15 shops in Sheep Street, Market Square, the Causeway and Crown Walk.
The first two correct entries drawn will win cash prizes.
In addition, details of the current ideas to change the church interior will be on show, with refreshments and a barbecue throughout the morning.
Mrs Scott added: "We hope to see as many local residents as possible in Sheep Street and at the church tomorrow, and get our campaign off to a flying start."
