Cycling campaigners want riders to report private hire taxi drivers driving dangerously in Oxford's bus lanes.

City cycle pressure group Cyclox has started to log incidents to try to get Oxfordshire County Council to reverse its decision to let the city's 357 private hire drivers use bus lanes.

The council has allowed private hire taxis to use bus lanes since last month after the taxi drivers fought a long battle to be put on an equal footing with the city's 106 black cabs.

Black cabs have been allowed to use the Woodstock Road and Banbury Road bus lanes for the last 12 years, but were banned from using the Botley Road bus lane in 1996 and only allowed back in two years ago.

Cyclox is now collecting a log of incidents to present to County Hall when it reviews the changes next year.

One incident the campaign group recorded happened the day after the start of the scheme when cyclist John Wilson and three other riders said they were cut up by a cabbie using the Botley Road bus lane.

Cyclox chairman James Styring said: "On the second day private hire vehicles were allowed to use the lanes I had a complaint from a cyclist.

"I haven't received any since then, but that doesn't mean they're not happening as people don't know where to report an incident.

"Letting private hire vehicles in bus lanes is a retrograde step. They are much smaller and quicker than buses and will often try to squeeze past cyclists rather than overtaking properly."

Mr Wilson, who runs Walton Street Cycles, in Jericho, said: "A minicab aggressively squeezed past us at Seacourt Tower and immediately pulled across our bows at the traffic lights.

"We filtered through to the front to await the green light and the taxi overtook again, almost knocking two cyclists off their bikes. He then started revving his engine and hurling abuse at us out of his window telling us to get out of the bus lane."

Mr Wilson said he did not get the registration plate of the driver, but reported the incident to Cyclox.

Tony Green, 001 Taxis owner and chairman of Oxford and District Licensed Private Hire and Associates, described the log as "petty".

He added: "All our drivers are qualified and know how to overtake cyclists safely. If someone on a bike has a grievance they should take his plate number and give me a ring."

Ian Hudspeth, county cabinet member for transport, said: "I believe we made the right decision to allow private hire vehicles in bus lanes, but if information comes forward about repeat offenders we can talk to them."
