Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial column, where he described how he “hates” Meghan Markle, has been pulled from The Sun’s website after thousands of complaints were made to the press regulator.

The Clarkson’s Farm star wrote in the Rupert Murdoch owned publication on Friday (December 16) that he "hated [Meghan] on a cellular level".

"At night, I'm unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her,” he also wrote.

Mr Clarkson’s comments came after the release of the final episodes of the Netflix's docuseries Harry & Meghan.

The opinion piece was removed from The Sun’s website yesterday (December 19).

Since the column’s publication, the Independent Press Standards Organisation has received more than 17,500 complaints about it.

The number has surpassed the total number of complaints the media regulator received in 2021, which was 14,355.

More than 60 cross-party MPs have also written to The Sun’s editor, Victoria Newton, to demand an apology and “action taken” against Jeremy Clarkson.

IPSO is the regulator for press in the UK and uses the Editors’ Code of Practice to see if there have been breaches in individual cases, as well as monitoring trends in editorial standards and making interventions to improve standards.

A spokesperson for IPSO said: “We will follow our usual processes to examine the complaints we have received. This will take longer than usual because of the volume of complaints.”
