A LANDSCAPE gardener has been killed in Ukraine, an inquest opening heard this week.

Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court opened an inquest into the death of Simon Lingard who died on November 7 this year.

Mr Lingard, who was from Preston in Lancashire, had volunteered to help fight in Ukraine after Russia invaded in February.

Coroner Darren Salter said: “It was reported Simon was killed in action. His cause of death is given as penetrative fragment injuries to the head and chest.”

His inquest was opened in Oxford on Wednesday 14 because his records were sent to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

A full inquest into Mr Lingard’s cause of death will be heard at the same court on April 16 next year.
