I read that there is to be a 'Mela' at Cowley Marsh, Oxford, with people from every race, colour and creed taking part (Oxford Mail, May 20).
It is good to see that city councillor Sajjad Malik and his friends realise that the park belongs to everyone, not just them.
What a shame the same people tried to 'exclude' a skatepark for children, young people and adults in their 'social inclusion'.
I live near the skatepark that has to be abandoned in Meadow Lane.
I am an OAP, but have so enjoyed watching the amazing skills of the skateboarders performing this healthy outdoor sport, which can be enjoyed by so many different age groups, and may even take them to international competitions all over the world.
Why on earth were the people of Cowley Marsh against a new skateboard park being built there?
I think they were crazy not to take advantage of such an amenity, which will cater for all age groups.
Mr Malik said he wanted tennis courts there, but they can be used by only four people at the most, and that is only if they can afford to pay the fees.
A skateboard park will be enjoyed by so many more people, including OAPs as spectators like myself!
The Meadow Lane skatepark has been a boon to skateboarders all over Oxford. It has never caused a nuisance or been noisy.
Cars only ever dropped skaters off and never sought to park.
In fact, many local residents were not even aware that the skatepark existed and those that were only ever had praise for those who used it.
We have all been proud to have it in our area and full of admiration for those who gave up their time to run it.
We are sad to lose such a multi-used, healthy amenity.
I think the people who opposed having it at Cowley Marsh Park must be biased, shortsighted and narrow-minded.
All Oxford parks belong to people from all over the city who pay council tax, not just the people who live near them.
I am pleased that the city council has used its power (Oxford Mail, May 29) to overrule these selfish people and listened to those who are trying to provide and improve things for all.
