Speed limit signs in Aston had to be painted over after impatient council workers put them up too soon.

An Aston resident shared a picture of a 20mph sign going into the village which had been spray painted and no longer visible.

The painted sign on the road still said 30.

The poster asked: "It seems Aston village is now speed limit free!"

However, it was not vandals who have defaced the speed warning signs – put up in a bid to slow down traffic.

The council had to paint them over itself after workers put them up too soon.

A council spokesperson said: "The 20mph signs have been spray painted by Oxfordshire County Council and will remain until the 30mph roundels on the road can be changed, in order to avoid having contradictory limits on the road.

"Once that is resolved, the spray paint will be removed and the road will officially become 20mph."

The county council said that the implementation of reduced speed limits in Witney had led to "confusion", with both 30mph and 20mph signs visible to motorists at one stage.

"Robust measures have been put in place by the council and its contractors to prevent similar issues happening again elsewhere," they said.

11 new 20mph schemes across the county including in Bladon, Clanfield and Brize Norton have recently been approved and will see the majority of 30mph roads cut to 20mph.
