MAGISTRATES have given detectives an extra 36 hours to quiz seven men arrested in connection with the Jericho murder.
Thames Valley Police applied to Oxford Magistrates’ Court this morning for permission to extend the amount of time they have to hold the seven suspects without charge.
It is understood that the seven are all men and have been arrested, variously, on suspicion of murder or assisting an offender.
By law, the police have 24 hours to interview a suspect without charge. That can be extended by a further 12 hours on the approval of a superintendent.
The magistrates can extend the period of detention to 96 hours – or four days – by which time the police must either charge a suspect or release them on bail, under investigation or take no further action.
Police continue to investigate the alleged murder of a man, 20s, named locally as Alex Innes, in Walton Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A total of 10 people have been arrested in connection with the man’s death.
A cordon remains in place on Walton Street today.
