Jean Laidlaw, left, and Janette Karselis earned the plaudits of the audience as they performed the ‘kick’ at a dance at Blackbird Leys, Oxford.
However, the Oxford Mail report of the event in 1965 didn’t concentrate on the dancing but on the cooking skills of the priest in charge, the Rev Mervyn Puleston.
He was in charge of catering for the 240 people who attended the ball at the community centre.

Apart from help with sandwiches and sausage rolls, he was responsible for the entire buffet.
His wife explained that he had completed a two-year course in hotel management before joining the Church.

The ball, which featured six bands, was in aid of the Musicians’ Union Benevolent Fund.
