The Eagle and Child – one of Oxford’s most famous pubs - has officially hit the market and is up for rent.

The pub has been shut since March 2020 and last month a campaigner warned the historic venue had been “left to rot” by owner St John’s College.

Dating back to the 17th century, the St Giles boozer had a long association with The Inklings, a writers group with members including J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis.

The Eagle and Child has now gone on the market and is up for rent, with the lucky custodian taking on arguably the city’s most well-known watering hole.

The pub is being marketing by Savills, which describes the venue as a “rare opportunity” for a would-be publican.

Although no figure is listed for the rent, Savills states: “Rental offers are invited for the benefit of a new lease with terms to be agreed. Suitable security will be required.”
