A McColl’s branch in Oxfordshire will close its doors, as Morrisons is set to shut 132 “loss-making” stores.

The supermarket chain confirmed in May it would purchase the brand as part of a £190 million rescue deal.

However, yesterday (November 1) it announced 132 shops with no realistic return to profitability would be culled – putting 1,300 jobs at risk.

This includes one store in Oxfordshire.

Banbury’s town centre store, in High Street, will be closed alongside other failing branches of the business.

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “Today marks an important moment for the McColl’s business, colleagues and customers as we formally welcome the business and its colleagues into the Morrisons family.

“We are now able to begin the urgent journey to transform McColl’s into a viable, well-invested and growing operation.”

A closure date has not been set.
