A couple who have taken over an Oxford estate pub said they were determined to turn it into a family-friendly, community venue.
Maxine and Michael Chapman took over the Ampleforth Arms, in Collinwood Road, Risinghurst, in February and a refurbishment is now complete.
Mrs Chapman, 24, said they were aware the pub had some problems in the past but were determined to make it a success.
She said: "The pub has been through manager after manager and from what we understand there was a bit of trouble.
"When we first took over there was a bit of trouble with the old crowd trying to get back in, but we don't want any of that in here.
"This is a lovely community and with children ourselves we feel we know what to offer families living in the area.
"We want to create a friendly atmosphere where people can come and enjoy a drink, some nice food and have a good time.
"People only need to come in and see the changes we have made to see it is a much brighter, warmer and more friendly atmosphere in here now than it was before."
Mrs Chapman said food would be an important part of the pub's attraction.
She said: "We are not hiring a chef, I will be doing all the food so it will all be home cooked.
"Also, all children under seven will eat for free.
"You don't want to pay money for a meal that hardly gets touched - and as a mum I know this can happen!
"In the summertime we will be doing barbecues in the garden and we are looking forward to everyone coming for those - that is providing we get some decent weather."
Mrs Chapman said since the refurbishment they had received a lot of positive feedback.
Customer Phil Stonham, 56, of Stanway Road, said: "It had got to the stage where I had stopped going into the Ampleforth because of the trouble you would get in there.
"I think the work that has been done to the pub is definitely an improvement and the new landlords appear to be making a real effort to make it a place for everyone in the area."
