It's an apparently confusing business working out when you mean Rose Hill (the road) and not Rose Hill (the Oxford estate).
And now campaigners are pressing for a name change for Rose Hill - the stretch of the A4158 that changes from Iffley Road, Henley Avenue, Rose Hill and Oxford Road to the Eastern Bypass.
A leaflet has been distributed around the area - but some residents have accused the anonymous authors of snobbery.
The A4 sheet reads: "Most people outside the immediate area do not know that there is a road called Rose Hill. Rose Hill to bus and taxi drivers is likely to be understood as Rose Hill the estate.
"There are Rose Hill signs from the roundabout to the Ashurst Way turn off that direct visitors to the estate of Rose Hill.
"More recently, signs have been put up on the road of Rose Hill that say Rose Hill with arrows that direct traffic away from Rose Hill the road to Rose Hill the estate.
"Some residents of the road find that visitors or newcomers can become confused because they follow the signs and end up in the estate.
"If the majority of residents do agree to a name change there would be a short period of adjustment which we believe would ultimately be worthwhile."
John Green, who lives in Rose Hill (the road), said he could understand the points being raised, but criticised the authors.
He said: "Yes, there is a bit of confusion regarding the road and the estate, but I feel this is driven by snobbery, by folk who want to distance themselves from the estate.
"And they want a poncey, twee name to enhance their property value.
"No-one has owned up to writing the leaflet and the anonymity of it all suggests they do not stand by their convictions."
Oxford City Council said it might consider changing the road name, but would consult everyone in the area about the idea first.
The authors contacted the Oxford Mail, but refused to reveal their identities.
However, they said: "This is a road with a long history and it deserves to be identifiable again as a place in its own right."
The leaflet suggests five alternative names and the reasons for choosing them: Dorchester Road: "The road of Rose Hill was previously known as the Henley Road, which is also the road to the village of Dorchester-on-Thames."
Henley Rise: "The whole of the road from what is now the roundabout to the plain was once known as the Henley Road."
Iffley Rise: "The first name ever given to the thoroughfare was 'Ifily Hy Way 1635'."
Old Rose Hill: "To distinguish it from the newer part of the area which is the estate."
Orchard Rise: "Before most of the houses were built, much of the land was apple orchards."
