A golf club in the heart of Cowley has built a secure storage unit to encourage members living locally to travel sustainably.

Oxford Golf Club on Hill Top Road has built 84 spaces for its members to store playing equipment and trolleys and a cycle security rail to encourage environmentally friendly travel as well.

The move has been prompted by Oxfordshire County Council’s decision to install Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in Cowley.

Steve Greenwood, general manager at Oxford Golf Club, said: “Our storage unit allows members to securely and safely leave heavy playing equipment on site, unlocking an option for them to leave their vehicles at home and travel on public transport, by foot or by bicycle."

A speed radar has also been installed at the club’s entrance to promote safe driving.

Mr Greenwood added: “We understand LTNs have divided opinion in Cowley and across the city. However, we are prepared to listen to our members and residents to minimise any potential disruption locally."

The club has also installed a state-of-the-art ‘Waste to Water’ facility to help it operate sustainably.

It separates grass clippings and mud from water that is used to wash down the course’s fleet of maintenance machinery each day.
