Dawdling By the Danube Edward Enfield (Summersdale, £7.99)

By the end of this book, Edward Enfield is 78 and says that he sometimes thinks of somewhere interesting he would like to go, but then remembers all the hassle of getting there, and the feeling subsides. This seems unlikely, since he is a pretty adventurous person. He met a German couple while cycling in Greece, and was given a list of towns which make up the 'Romantic Road' through Bavaria. He decided to do the journey on his own - accompanied by a small TV crew. A columnist with The Oldie magazine, he writes with a dry wit which had me laughing out loud, plus a faux naivete about the world of travel journalism - to which he came late in life, having spent his working life as a local government officer. Love Is Not Enough Merryn Somerset Webb (HarperCollins, £8.99)

The point of the title is that you need money as well, and in this sharp, punchy guide, Merryn Somerset Webb suggests a multitude of ways in which women can make, increase and save money. Relevant or not, her statistical titbits are hard-hitting. Women who work full-time are paid on average 13 per cent less than men who work full-time. The average woman buys £13,000 worth of clothes that she never wears. Less than a third of female pensioners qualify for the full state pension (compared with 98 per cent of men). Merryn has excellent points to make about all of these, to help you, whether you're drowning in debt, negotiating a higher salary, or buying a house. P.L.
