Southfield Golf Club is in the heart of Oxford overlooking the dreaming spires of the city. The course has the enviable reputation as a golfing jewel in the city's sprawling suburban crown.

Golf was first played in the area in 1873 and was originally laid out by James Braid. However, today's 18-hole course owes much to renowned designer Harry Colt, who made good use of the undulating parkland, mature trees and stunning surroundings when he created a new course in the 1920s based on Braid's original designs.

James Braid and Harry Shapland Colt are arguably the greatest course designers ever. Braid was five-times Open championship winner, and responsible for the King's and Queen's courses at Gleneagles as well as more than 200 others.

Colt was the architect of 300 including Wentworth, Sunningdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes, Royal St George's and Royal Melbourne.

The course is an excellent challenge for golfers of all standards, with many memorable holes. Henry Longhurst, the voice of golf in the 1960s and 1970s, described the 12th hole as one of the best par 3 holes in the country.

All members of staff are fiercely proud of the golf course and its history. So why not savour some of this yourself and play this superb course, either as a society visitor, or join as a member?
