THE CEO of a young carers charity in Oxfordshire is running the Oxford Half Marathon dressed as the charity’s logo.

Sabiene North, chief executive officer of Be Free Young Carers’ (BFYC), will be fundraising to feed Oxfordshire’s young carers.

During her first year as CEO, Ms North has witnessed firsthand how the cost-of-living crisis is impacting young carers across the county.

In the last month alone, Ms North recalls hearing a young carer explain how they don’t receive pupil premium and so don't qualify for free school meals.

This has resulted in sometimes there being no food at home, so they can't take a packed lunch to school.

“This is what I heard from one of our young carers,” she said. “The cost-of-living crisis is hitting Oxfordshire’s young carers and their families.

“I am raising funds to ensure that every young carer who comes to our activities or youth groups has access to a hot meal or snacks. No child should go to bed hungry.”

BFYC has 600 children registered from across South Oxfordshire and The Vale where it has been operating for more than 27 years.

Recently the charity has expanded its services to young carers in Oxford City, that previously has no support for children and young people caring for loved ones.
