HUNDREDS of homes in Oxford are currently without water due to a burst water main, which caused chaos on the ring road for the past two days.

The Eastern Bypass was closed to traffic between the Heyford Hill and Rose Hill roundabouts after the Thames Water pipe failed on Tuesday morning, flooding the carriageway.

The closure saw gridlock with lengthy delays on Tuesday, which continued into the evening and into yesterday morning.

The misery is expected to continue with the road remaining closed at least until tomorrow for resurfacing work.

Thames Water told the Oxford Mail they received 930 customer calls related to the issue yesterday and that at least 290 properties were affected but it is unclear how many houses are currently without water.

The company has set up four bottled water collection points, where people can get the supplies they need.

The water stations can be found at:

  • Tesco in Ambassador Avenue, Oxford, OX4 6XJ
  • Asda in London Road, Wheatley, Oxford, OX33 1YZ
  • Horspath Cricket Club in Oxford Road, Horspath, Oxford OX33 1RT (pedestrian access only)
  • Cattle Market Car Park, North Street, Thame, OX9 3BJ
