People living close to a house in Wheatley where a woman had her throat slashed and died after a Bank Holiday Monday domestic dispute have spoken of their shock.

A unnamed woman died and a man is in hospital in a critical condition after the incident in Wheatley yesterday.

Officers were called to Bell Lane at 4.15pm after being alerted by a member of the public and found the man and woman seriously injured.

The pair were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the woman later died from her injuries.

Janet Carr, of Crown Road, chairman of Wheatley Parish Council, said: "I feel great concern and sadness. I believe this was a suspected domestic incident, which can happen anywhere.

"People are shocked that it has happened, not that it has happened in Wheatley, but that it has happened at all."

An ambulance service spokesman said a 47-year-old woman suffered throat lacerations.

It is believed the man - who was described locally as the woman's partner - also suffered injuries to his throat.

John Robbins, 68, of Westfield Road, said: "It's a thing you don't think will happen in such a quiet peaceful village - it's quite surprising.

"There are quite a few people who don't know about it yet."
