A railway maintenance worker who lost his leg after he was struck by train is still in a stable but critical condition in Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

The unnamed 55-year-old man was carrying out signal repair work when he was struck by a passenger train travelling between London Paddington and Oxford on Friday night.

The man's left leg had to be amputated at the scene in Kennington.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "He is in a stable but critical condition at this moment.

"Obviously, an investigation will be launched into this, but at this time there is nothing more we can say."

The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation.
