Changes are yet to be made to a busy motorway junction where lorries regularly overturn.

The Highways Agency is awaiting the results of a survey being carried out at Baynards Green roundabout on the A43, just off the M40, to decide what action needs to be done to prevent more HGV accidents.

Since 2003, the Highways Agency has recorded 10 non-fatal incidents involving HGVs at the roundabout.

North Oxfordshire MP Tony Baldry said the complex configuration of roads at Junction 10 of the M40 at Ardley needed resolving.

Mr Baldry has written to the Transport Minister Tom Harris and Highways Agency chief executive Archie Robertson.

He said: "A very large number of HGVs come up from Southampton and the docks, via Newbury to Junction nine at Bicester, go a dog-leg to Junction 10 and then take the A43 towards Northampton and likewise in the other direction.

"It appears lorries are overturning at the same spot at Junction 10, on the approach to the roundabout, prior to going up to the motorway."

John Mair, of Weston-on-the-Green, said: "Junction 10 is a death trap. How long before a car is crushed?"

Mr Baldry has asked the Highways Agency to carry out an urgent assessment of what can be done by traffic engineers.

He said: "Alternatively, if this is thought to be a matter of lorries trying to take the roundabout too fast, then perhaps the Highways Agency can give consideration to what can be done to impress upon lorry drivers and the risks at this roundabout?"

The Highways Agency said it had been working closely with the Freight Transport Association to encourage its members to drive with caution at all roundabouts, including at Junction 10 of the M40.

Highways Agency spokesman Stuart Thompson said: "Once the consultants have carried out the survey and presented us with recommendations, we will look at it.

"The Highways Agency priorities work across the region and country and we would need to work out where work concerned with Junction 10 would fit in and if there is funding available.

"We are hoping to get the survey in due course, we haven't got a specific date, but we are keen to get it as soon as possible."
