Police will later today start to question four men who were travelling in a car that collided with an ambulance on the A40 earlier today.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after the black Renault Clio collided with an ambulance in Cassington.

Eight people were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital following the smash.

The South Central Ambulance Service vehicle was travelling with a patient - who was under arrest for a domestic-related incident - from Witney to the JR when it collided head-on with the Clio.

One ambulance crew member received a minor back injury while the driver suffered a broken finger.

A patient and a police officer riding in the ambulance both received minor injuries.

Police said the four men in the Clio were all in their 20s and all from Wallingford and the surrounding area.

All suffered minor injuries.

Michelle Ullett, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service, said: "As the incident is currently under police investigation we are unable to comment any further at the present time."

The 24-year-old driver of the Clio was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The A40 was closed between the Wolvercote roundabout and the Eynsham roundabout until 6am.

Insp Nigel Welham of Oxfordshire roads policing said: "We are relieved no one was badly injured in what could have been a very serious collision. "
