It seems that the so-called credit crunch is sparing no-one - now even animals are being caught in its grip.
Animal charities report a growing number of people giving up their pets.
With household bills soaring, something has to give - and in some cases, it is the cats and dogs that are being sacrificed.
No doubt that is causing distress to the families, particularly those with young children, as well as to the animals.
But to many, giving up our four-legged friends will be a necessity - food, clothing, household bills and debt repayments must come first.
However, we hope those struggling to make ends meet in the present climate will act responsibly.
The last thing we want to see is animals dumped by the side of the road or elsewhere.
Animal sanctuaries are there to help, even though they will be feeling the credit crunch themselves.
Many rely on donations from wellwishers to keep going, and when money is tight, they also feel the pinch.
They will need extra help, too.
