A serial beggar has been handed an antisocial behaviour order (Asbo) after complaints from the public.

Andrew Swadling, 33, of Marlborough Road, Oxford, was issued the Asbo by Oxford magistrates.

The four-year order bans Swadling from begging anywhere in England and Wales or using threatening, insulting and abusive behaviour.

Pc Paul Phillips, from Oxford city centre neighbourhood team, said: "I am pleased that the magistrates have supported us by imposing this antisocial behaviour order on Mr Swadling.

"Mr Swadling's aggressive begging has caused harassment, alarm and distress to many residents and people in the community.

"This order shows that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated and that the Crown Prosecution Service supports the police in seeking to reduce antisocial behaviour across Oxford by the imposition of such orders."

Anyone who sees Mr Swadling breaking the conditions of his Asbo should inform the police on 08458 505505.
