Sir - We note from the report (May 16) that the city council supports the Weston Otmoor eco-town.

The developer (Parkridge) has made many promises in presenting their proposal, including free park-and-ride services, free trams, free rail to Bicester and Oxford.

They have also said that they estimate that the rail links provided will carry 5,000 people an hour, all no doubt leaving their cars in the parking provided and taking to (basically free) public transport.

With an expected 20,000 residents this is either social engineering on a grand scale, or smoke and mirrors designed to attract people like Ed Turner. Also by dumping at least 20,000 extra cars at the junction of the A34 and the M40, Mr Turner avers that this will in some mysterious way "alleviate congestion problems on the A34"!

Assuming the developers build all these inducements, when they have taken their profit and gone, who will pay for the running, upkeep and support of all these extra free attractions? Not Mr Turner or his voters, but the people who will be living in the new (eco) town. This scheme is nothing other than a new town development under another name and one which will kill our village, and others, for no more than profit for the developers and political expediency.
