CYCLISTS geared up for a 52-mile ride to celebrate a unique historic connection.
The first statue-to-statue ride from King Alfred's birthplace in Wantage to his resting place in Winchester took place on Sunday.
The 65 riders, aged between 15 and 70, cycled past the Blowing Stone, which legend says Alfred the Great used to summon his troops for the Battle of Ashdown, the first major Saxon victory over a Viking army.
On the final leg they passed Hyde Abbey Garden which marks the location of Hyde Abbey, King Alfred's final resting place in Winchester.
Organisers said it was a dry run for a bigger race planned for 2010 to mark Winchester's 900th anniversary celebrations.
