The Oxford branch of Popeyes smashed the chain’s record for the number of chicken sandwiches sold on an opening day.

The American fried chicken chain has a cult following behind its famous fried chicken with hungry customers setting up camp the night before branches open, just to get their hands on the food first.

The opening of the Oxford’s branch, in Queen Street, on September 17 was no different.

People queued up outside the store from 5am, hoping to be one of the lucky customers to get a free chicken sandwich or win a year’s worth of free chicken.

Opening day at the Oxford branch was the busiest ever for the company in the UK, Popeyes head office told this newspaper, with more than 2,000 chicken sandwiches sold.
