VAUXHALL has released the first pictures of the new Insignia that will make its world premiere at the British International Motor Show in July.

The all-wheel-drive car, which will have a choice of five engines, is a five-seater, that will initially be available in hatchback and saloon guise.

Mark Adams, vice president design, GM Europe, said: "We've re-defined our design vocabulary. The Insignia is muscular, but lithe and curvaceous.

"Our aim was to develop a confident look which reinforced the car's superb driving dynamics, but also one that made it clear that this was a premium product, albeit still at a highly competitive price in its class."

A Vauxhall spokesman said the dashboard's top-pad wraps around from the instrument panel to the door, creating a unique wing-shape and embracing the occupants. He said: "Ambient lighting, which will be featured in future Vauxhall models, radiates a warm, luxurious aura.

"Much emphasis has also been put into the development of the seats, which set the highest standards in ergonomics, comfort and safety."

Vauxhall's expertise in lighting technology is underpinned by the Insignia's latest generation AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) system. Nine different light beam settings automatically adjust themselves to cater for various driving conditions.

Hans Demant, vice president, engineering for GM Europe, said: "As each feature demonstrates, the Insignia is the result of our quest to develop a car that combines striking design, excellent driving dynamics and innovative technology."

The Insignia will be offered with front-wheel and all-wheel drive.
