A FOOTBALL club that has been at the heart of an Oxford community for four decades is gearing up for its anniversary celebrations.

Marston Saints Football Club, based at the recreation ground in Boults Lane, Old Marston, was founded in 1968 by Tony Roberts Snr (affectionately known as Alf after then England manager Alf Ramsey), and will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday, June 14.

Chairman John Page said the club was an important part of the Marston community and said it was looking to build on past successes.

He said: "The club has been great for kids in this community, giving them something to do, some focus and discipline.

"We have had players here that have gone on to play at the highest level for club and country, such as Martin Keown and Garry Parker.

"In this day and age there aren't many clubs that have lasted as long as we have, and I think a lot of that is down to our relationship with the local community.

"We've got great ties with the local parish council, our local councillors and local busin- esses."

Mr Page, who has been involved with the Saints for 20 years, said the club had a real sense of community that made everyone welcome.

He said: "This year we've had success with the girls team and with one of the junior boys teams, but the best thing is seeing everyone happy and having fun."

The club is also opening new pitches on reclaimed wasteland off of Marsh Lane, funded by Oxford City Council and Wren, the scheme which distributes revenue from landfill taxes.

To mark the anniversary, the club will hold a special dinner on Saturday, June 14, at the Oxford Centre, in Banbury Road.

Charlie Haynes, chairman of Old Marston Parish Council, said: "They have done exceptional things and have always given back to the community of Marston. I shall definitely be joining them to celebrate their anniversary and I hope there will be many more."
