Oxford shop Tim’s Newsagent and Off Licence closes after decades of trade

Tim’s Newsagent and Off Licence in High Street officially closed its doors for the final time on Saturday (September 17).

The business was run by Tim Gresswell who, when speaking with this newspaper in May, said he was “devastated” to have to shut up shop after being in charge for four decades.

When Mr Gresswell took over the shop in 1989 it had already been a firm fixture in the city for half a century, after Gladys Annett started a business in it in 1938.

He said: “I am devastated. I have been in business 40 years, it is like my family.

“Most people in Oxford, if you just walk down the street say ‘oh, do you know Tim’s?’ they will know it.”

The 66-year-old cited the impacts of the pandemic and disagreements with this landlord as the reason for Tim’s closure.

The High Street business now sits in darkness behind metal shutters, with a blue coloured notice pinned on the front window thanking customers for their support.

The notice reads: “Tim’s Newsagent has now CLOSED DOWN.

“I and my staff would like to thank all our loyal customers over the last 84 years. Many of whom have become good friends.

“The business was originally opened by Gladys Annett in 1938 and traded from the Oxford Covered Market until 2017. I took the business over 1988 and opened on this site in 2001.

“Wishing you all well for the future.

“Tim Gresswell.”
