The Liberal Democrats have thrown in the towel at Oxford City Council after a disastrous election night.
Their administration effectively became redundant after Labour gained four seats bringing their tally to 23 of the city's 48 seats.
That is short of an overall majority, but makes them the largest party by some distance.
For council leader John Goddard, it could mark the end of his political career - but certainly spelt the end of his group's two year tenure.
He hinted he would stand down as group leader - possibly by tomorrow when the Lib Dems are set to hold a group meeting.
Mr Goddard said: "We won't be the administration.
"Labour are the largest single party, I can't imagine why they won't take over.
"The Lib Dems will go upwards from here.
"I am not sure I will stay on as leader, that is something for the group to decide."
