When doing the Artweeks rounds, you can end up in some very unusual venues. One of the most charming has to be The Bothy in Wytham where Kate Day-Dawson and David Sutcliffe are displaying their work in a studio and conservatory set in a most beautiful garden. This setting is integral to the work as both artists draw great inspiration from the natural world. Kate creates mosaics almost entirely from recycled materials (china, glass, wood). But even though their origins are from unwanted and thrown-away objects you can't say that about Kate's finished pieces, which have transformed this unlikely stuff into gorgeous pieces (see above) with complex designs, largely inspired by foliage and willow pattern. It is excellently crafted and quite unique. They certainly gleam and tantalise the eye, and so does the work on display of the photographer David Sutcliffe. His love of plant life and nature is palpable in the work, and so to is his fascination with light. Using his expertise in digital technology to enhance his already strong eye for subject, he has succeeded in capturing the real essence of form, particularly for me in his works featuring plants and flowers. All in all, a symbiotic pairing of work in an idyllic setting. Make this one a visit.
